Southern 6 Stage Start

The Brighton and Hove Men's team started their winter by finishing in 36th place at the SEAA 6 Stage Road Relay Championships at Aldershot on Saturday. It was a mixed day for Brighton who were trying to qualify for the National Road Relays in Sutton Park next month. In the end a top 25 finish and qualification was beyond a weakened Brighton team but there was the consolation of being the highest place Sussex team.

Each runner was required to run two undulating laps of Rushmore Arena totalling 6k. Kev Mason took the challenging first leg and gave the Brighton A team a good start finishing in 34th position with 19:43. Dave Boyce coming off a two week break ran a solid leg of 20:40 to finish 43rd. Shaun Billing, a last minute addition to the team ran to form with 21:23, to leave us 47th. Fourth leg was Dan Tetheradge. Dan has been struggling for fitness recently and his leg of 22:08 dropped us to 52nd.

It was now over to Andy Donno and Chris Thomson on legs five and six to try and turn things around. Andy set off and looked to be flying on the first lap of the two lap course. This pace was continued on lap two and Andy's time of 19:35 gained the team 11 places.

Last year on the final leg Chris took the team into a qualification position on the final leg. This year he had too much to do and had to concentrate on maintaining our position as first Sussex team. Chris set off at a controlled pace covering the first lap in 10:00. On the second lap Chris began to push and with a fast last lap of 9:46 finished with 19:46. Another 5 places had been gained and we ended up 36th. Given the hilly nature of this course it is difficult to run a negative split so well done to Chris for keeping his head and maintaining our position as first Sussex team home, albeit only by 15 seconds.

Mid-packers August 2008

A quick and dirty August update.

Firstly a lament for speed, after the annual 3K at the the open meeting at Withdean 13th August, there was much (grey) hair pulling about the lost speed of yore, with none of the usual suspects managing to get under the magic 10 minute mark; including some complaint about the spikes being too far forward. Well they are if you are slow and run on your heels. At least Louis Taub managed to run a decent time, in fact his pb, around 9.30. in the 5K Phoenix's Josh Guilmant displayed great pace judgment to pull away from James Baker in the last lap. Josh 15.15 ish. James c. 15.25. In comparison Josh Painter looked terrible but still ran 16.20 odd so he must have been going okay.

Approx times for 3K

Ben Warren (Hailsham Harriers) around 9 min

Louis Taub 9.30 ish

Shaun Billing 10.03

Mikey B and Mark Halls, 10.30 ish

Andy Mitch 11 ish

17th August

Henfield Half, brutal run out for those bored with the sunday run, the winner clocking over 80 suggests the interesting nature of the course, a fair proportion of which was thigh high rutted reed bed paths.

1 98 Geoffrey Gray. 1.20:12 Seaford Striders

8 235 Shaun Billing. 1.28:16 B & H City Athletic Club

60 135 Andy Michelson. 1.46:20 B & H City Athletic Club

99 90 Stewart Mackman. 1.51:34 B & H City Athletic Club

105 245 Evie Cicha. 1.52:24 B & H City Athletic Club

198 58 Richard Felton. 2.14.17 B & H City Athletic Club

On the same day there was a terrible sounding 32 mile run down in deepest Dorset, to which a few of the ultra minded flocked. The race was won by a resurgent Gary Woolgar in 5 hours, who recently came a close second to Stuart Mills at the Downland 30. Mark Halls in prep for his Himalayan extravaganza was top 10 in 5.30, and 'ard Kev Bush ran it under 6 hours.

On 22nd August was Tom Ulliott's de facto 10K sussex champs, details of which are elsewhere on this site. 25 laps is a long way!

Refuel within 30 minutes 23rd August yet another epic Mark Halls production, where characters including Neil 'light weight' Walford, Kev 'country squire' Bush, special guest from Ranelagh Andy 'Good Run Guide' Bickerstaff as well as 'the producer' and various other self styled low lifes (they wish) visited Dark Star brewery and mid-sussex establishments, before retiring to grimy places on the coast, the Brighton sub-set ultimately catching some truly horrific band in the Hobgoblin GROW UP YOU'RE IN YOUR FORTIES!! (not the name of the band)

Included here is Tom Ulliott's Sussex Grand Prix update,

All,

Many of you will be wondering where the Sussex Grand Prix results are as
the web-site has not been updated for quite some time. The organisers
advise that there has been many problems over the year and they are only
now on top of the back-log. One significant issue being that a couple
of the clubs previously part of the grand prix have not renewed annual
subscriptions and not responded to any contact, hence all the results
have retrospectively had to be amended to exclude members from those
clubs.

Anyway, the attached is a couple of files I've been sent that capture
the current status of the (club) league and individual standings up to race
number 9. (For some reason we are enable to upload these tables, so if interested please contact Tom Ulliott or Shaun Billing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it )

You will see that we as a club are well down the standing but there is
ample scope to leap up the league as there are plenty of races still to
come. Use the Sussex Races Events planner site for details of all races
and hope to see you at some of them

Best wishes

Tom

All,
I'm delighted to be able to say that the 'Brighton Birthday Boys' track
10,000m went ahead very successfully on Fri 22nd August in lovely evening
sunshine and with only a slight wind down the finishing straight.
There was real quality at the sharp end and a good turn out from a range
of Brighton runners
Also excellent support for the time-keeping and lap recording so thanks
so much to all who turned up and ran or assisted
Results have been sent to Athletics Weekly so I hope they will be
captured and reported next week.  I'm hoping that this may well become
an annual event on or around this same date so watch this space

Best wishes
Tom Ulliott

Senior Mens Team Bounce Back

[results and final table]

The final Men’s League match of the season saw the team having to travel to Bromley trying to keep their promotion chances alive. We needed to get at least a 2nd place to ensure a return to Division One and this was achieved with Hercules Wimbledon winning the match to also gain promotion.

Man of the Match was Josh Mouland – returning to the team for the first time this year and getting 16 points covering 5 events including a win in the Pole Vault B string.

The Middle Distance squad achieved MAXIMUM POINTS over 4 events with club captain Dave Boyce’s 1.56.7 personal best in the 800 A string a particular highlight. Andrew Donno finished unbeaten in the 3000m Steeplechase for the season running to victory with 9.59.3 after winning the 5000m A string in 15.39.4. Rich Airey also completed a double winning the 800m B and the 1500m A.

The performance of the day was from Andy Adair who smashed his personal best in the 400m with a scintillating 49.7 - his first time under the 50 second barrier. He later ran a 49.0 split in the 4 X 4 relay.

We can now relax for the rest of the summer, in the knowledge that we can prepare for a fresh start in Division One in 2009 and look to improve on the fine form we have shown this season. Well done to all athletes who have competed and particular thanks to travelling officials and supporters Graham Ingram, Keith Donno, Peter Witcomb, Lesley Parsons, Mike Bazire and Chris Carter. The team would also like to thank Hove YMCA and driver Phil Carey for the use of their minibus over the season.
