Men's 12 and Women's 6-stage Southern Road Relay Championships
Written by Matt Bristow

Sunday 5th April, The Open University, Milton Keynes.

In near perfect conditions at The Open University in Milton Keynes the men’s team finished in 22nd position and qualified for the National Road Relays for the 5th year in succession and the Women finished an impressive 10th in their first outing in this competition for many years.

The format in the men’s race was 6 long legs of 7.98k and 6 short legs of 5.5k alternating long followed by short. The fastest long leg from the Brighton team and by any Sussex runner came from Kev Mason with 25:47. Kev proved last weekend that he was in great shape by taking over 30 seconds off his 10k time to record 32:01 at the Eastleigh 10k. The fastest short leg of the day was run by Dave Boyce on leg 2 with 18:17. Although there were impressive runs throughout the team to gain a qualification position, another notable performances came from M50 athlete John Lowden who in the absence of Nigel Gates stepped up to run a long leg in a time of 28:17.

Under the guidance of the new women’s team manager Tom Ulliott, the women were required to run 6 short legs of 5.5k. Jeanette Kenneally had the competitive first leg and ran 21:55 to bring the team back in 24th. Katy Moore on second leg was the fastest Brighton woman of the day with 20:04 lifting the team up to 10th. There was a brief spell outside the top ten as Julia Downes and Laura Lambourne ran 21:49 and 23:54 respectively. It was a last minute call up for Laura who stepped in to replace an injured athlete. Fiona Powell on leg 5 brought the team back inside the top 10 with 20:45 and Grace Geilinger held this position with 22:10.

Results are on the mkac website.

Next race for the Brighton Men and Women’s teams is the Sussex Road Relays on Saturday 11th April. On the 18th April the men will be contesting the National 12 stage Road Relay Championships at Sutton Park Birmingham.

Written by Ann Titheradge
Saturday, 07 March 2009 12:45

It has been an excellent season for the girls cross county this year. The under 13 girls have won 3 team medals this season – bronze for the Cross Country Relays, Gold at Preston Park Phoenix Run and Silver in the League Competition. It has been fabulous to see so many girls out representing the club at cross country – and all appearing to be enjoying the experience! Well done to all our runners. Our thanks to our John, Peter, Sam and Toni for their enthusiastic coaching.

Cross Country Championships at Stanmer Park – 3rd January

The cross country championships saw a fantastic run by our under 13s. At the finish line there was a constant stream of red vests as our 6 girls all finished together separated by just 24 seconds!

16th Holly Turner, 17th Laura Smith, 18th Ella Faulkner, 19th Ella Spurgeon, 20th Beth Faulkner and 21st Esther Lutz Davies. An amazing achievement out of a field of 43 runners, with all girls finishing in the top half of the race.

Due to injury and illness there were no under 15s, while in the under 17s Emma Palmer ran an excellent race to finish 11th in her first run for the club.

Cross Country League Race 3 at Bexhill – 10th January

Despite freezing conditions seven girls took part in the under 13s race, which was the last league race this season for this age group. An excellent run by all the girls

The Boys Strike Gold at Lancing
Written by Nick Wilmot
Tuesday, 03 March 2009 22:27

The Brighton & Hove under 15 and under 17 boys cross country teams came out on top at the last Sussex League meeting at Lancing on 28th February.

A smaller field than usual lined up for the non-scoring under 13 boys race due to the inter-county schools race at Bexley taking place on the same day. The league was decided over the previous three meetings. Brighton & Hove boys secured third place at Bexhill last time out. Two Brighton & Hove boys ran the Lancing race Tom Stewart-Green came 6th of 18 and Harry Sullivan-Jones finished 11th.

With medals still to be won in the other two junior age groups spirits within the team were high. Due to the combination of scoring at the three previous races all of the four runners in the under 15’s were in with a chance of securing an individual medal. The team had been leading the pack from the first meeting at Goodwood in October and started the race 25 points in front of Eastbourne Rovers in second place.

After the first two laps of the Bowling Green all four of the Brighton & Hove boys were running together in the leading group. As the race developed over the 4.5 K course the team got strung out. Alex Rice crossed the finish line 5th of the 21 runners in a time of 16:56 followed by Liam Hurley 6th in 16:58, Jake Elliott 8th in 17:16 and Tom Wilmot 9th in 17:26. The ‘A’ team finished with gold winning the league by 34 points. As all four of the boys had scored for the ‘A’ team in at least one race they all received medals. Unfortunately, they all missed out on individual medals. Of all the boys that took part in three scoring races Jake Elliott came 4th of 15, Alex Rice 5th, Liam Hurley 6th and Tom Wilmot 8th. The two other stalwarts of the under 15’s this winter Charlie and Harvey Noakes were unavailable for the last race of the season but their efforts help with the ‘B’ team finishing the league in 8th place and the ‘C’ team 15th.

As with the Under 15s’ the Under 17 boys had been top of the league all season and started the last meeting 15 points in front of Lewes. It was nearly a full turn out for the fourth race. The only absence being Jonny Crickmore who was busy winning the under 16 British Orienteering Championships at Fordingbridge.

James McCarthy who had been so dominant in the league all season led the field home in a time of 16:50. Kieran Silsby finished 5th with a time of 17:38, Adam Smith 7th, 17:54, Will Grey 8th, 18:01 and Chris Woolcott 11th, 18:29. The ‘A’ team increased the winning margin to 44 points with James, Kieran, Jonny, Adam and Will scoring in at least one race. The ‘B’ team finished the league in 6th place of the 12 teams. Individual placings for the boys who finished at least three races were. James McCarthy 1st of 18, Kieran Silsby 5th, Will Grey 8th and Chris Woolcott 11th.

Saturday 21 February, Parliament Hill, London

Seven men and five women took on the challenge presented by the 2009 National Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill in London on Saturday. The runners enjoyed a fine sunny day but the biggest test was the mud and hilly terrain presented by the spiritual home of cross country running.

In the 12 kilometre men’s race it was two athletes returning from injury that led the Brighton team home. Kev Mason overtook Matt Bristow on the first of the 6k laps and extended his lead to approximately 40 seconds until the final mile where Matt closed to within five seconds. The men’s team finished in 46th place overall. Final positions were, 227 Kev Mason 45:44; 232 Matt Bristow 45:49; 286 Josh Painter 46:51; 636 Shaun Billing 51:45; 858 Mike Bannister 55:07; 868 Dan Titheradge 55:17; 1245 Andy Mitchelson 62:15.

In the 8 kilometre women’s race the leading athlete was Fiona Powell running in her first Cross Country race. Fiona led the women’s team home to a creditable 55th place. Final positions were, 129 Fiona Powell 36:15; 414 Gill Cammack 45:16; 453 Isobel Muir 46:59; 483 Barbara Bassett 48:48; 521 Fiona Rowling 52:51
