Mid-packers August 2008
Written by Shaun Billing

A quick and dirty August update.

Firstly a lament for speed, after the annual 3K at the the open meeting at Withdean 13th August, there was much (grey) hair pulling about the lost speed of yore, with none of the usual suspects managing to get under the magic 10 minute mark; including some complaint about the spikes being too far forward. Well they are if you are slow and run on your heels. At least Louis Taub managed to run a decent time, in fact his pb, around 9.30. in the 5K Phoenix's Josh Guilmant displayed great pace judgment to pull away from James Baker in the last lap. Josh 15.15 ish. James c. 15.25. In comparison Josh Painter looked terrible but still ran 16.20 odd so he must have been going okay.

Approx times for 3K

Ben Warren (Hailsham Harriers) around 9 min

Louis Taub 9.30 ish

Shaun Billing 10.03

Mikey B and Mark Halls, 10.30 ish

Andy Mitch 11 ish

17th August

Henfield Half, brutal run out for those bored with the sunday run, the winner clocking over 80 suggests the interesting nature of the course, a fair proportion of which was thigh high rutted reed bed paths.

1 98 Geoffrey Gray. 1.20:12 Seaford Striders

8 235 Shaun Billing. 1.28:16 B & H City Athletic Club

60 135 Andy Michelson. 1.46:20 B & H City Athletic Club

99 90 Stewart Mackman. 1.51:34 B & H City Athletic Club

105 245 Evie Cicha. 1.52:24 B & H City Athletic Club

198 58 Richard Felton. 2.14.17 B & H City Athletic Club

On the same day there was a terrible sounding 32 mile run down in deepest Dorset, to which a few of the ultra minded flocked. The race was won by a resurgent Gary Woolgar in 5 hours, who recently came a close second to Stuart Mills at the Downland 30. Mark Halls in prep for his Himalayan extravaganza was top 10 in 5.30, and 'ard Kev Bush ran it under 6 hours.

On 22nd August was Tom Ulliott's de facto 10K sussex champs, details of which are elsewhere on this site. 25 laps is a long way!

Refuel within 30 minutes 23rd August yet another epic Mark Halls production, where characters including Neil 'light weight' Walford, Kev 'country squire' Bush, special guest from Ranelagh Andy 'Good Run Guide' Bickerstaff as well as 'the producer' and various other self styled low lifes (they wish) visited Dark Star brewery and mid-sussex establishments, before retiring to grimy places on the coast, the Brighton sub-set ultimately catching some truly horrific band in the Hobgoblin GROW UP YOU'RE IN YOUR FORTIES!! (not the name of the band)

Included here is Tom Ulliott's Sussex Grand Prix update,

All,

Many of you will be wondering where the Sussex Grand Prix results are as
the web-site has not been updated for quite some time. The organisers
advise that there has been many problems over the year and they are only
now on top of the back-log. One significant issue being that a couple
of the clubs previously part of the grand prix have not renewed annual
subscriptions and not responded to any contact, hence all the results
have retrospectively had to be amended to exclude members from those
clubs.

Anyway, the attached is a couple of files I've been sent that capture
the current status of the (club) league and individual standings up to race
number 9. (For some reason we are enable to upload these tables, so if interested please contact Tom Ulliott or Shaun Billing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it )

You will see that we as a club are well down the standing but there is
ample scope to leap up the league as there are plenty of races still to
come. Use the Sussex Races Events planner site for details of all races
and hope to see you at some of them

Best wishes

Tom

Cathy and Tom's wedding day 10 miler

Tom Ulliott writes.....

All,

As Cathy and I went off on our hols directly after the wedding day 5 and 10 this is the first chance I've had to send out the results and updated all time list along with a short note on the run itself.

We were lucky enough to have a pretty nice evening for the run with about the usual number of runners turning out. Unfortunately Carats café didn't open and neither were the loos so perhaps we'll look to start and finish at the end of Hove Lagoon in future years as facilities are slightly better there.

Firstly thanks to the lovely Tracey Whittle for doing the honours with the stop watch and also to my very own Dave and Trish for being the human bollards marking the turn at the far end.

Although still recovering from his marathon, Shaun soon pulled away in the 10 miles for a good class solo run to come home well clear of yours truly in 60:51. Although initially aiming for a sub 60 this was still a great time for what was effectively a solo time trial and is his 2nd fastest showing on the course, only bettered by his 59:50 in 2005 which remains the only time anyone has broken 60 mins on the course. I was quite happy with my 62:46 as this was in fact my quickest time, improving on last year's by 14 seconds.

Neil, also recovering from his recent marathon had a good solid run for 3rd in 63:43.

Cathy was the only lady to brave the longer distance and was rewarded for her efforts with a great run, coming home in 68:16 after catching up with Dave Whittle and Mark Halls in the latter stages. This was the fist sub-70 clocking for a lady on the course and in fact takes almost 5 mins off the previous fastest ladies time set in 2006.

Mikey B zipped round the 5m course in 36:36 with Chris Moyle not too far behind in 37:10. Evie continues with her fine form to be first lady in 38:13 which is the fastest ladies time of the two years we have held the 5m option so well done to her.

After the run most of us, at Mark's suggestion, retired to the nearby Tapas restaurant at Southwick Marina for a great end to a lovely eve and perfect prep for the hols which followed.

You'll see that I've updated the all time list but there's a few blanks in terms of ages at the time of the relevant runs so if any of you wish to share your d.o.b. or simply your age band at the time of each run with me I'll update that.

See you all soon

Tom

Mid-packers June 2008

Mid-packers,

About time for a mid-packers transmogrification, let's hope you can recognise. Isn't the new web site great, nice one Boycee! To write this now is like making puff pastry over buying frozen from Tescos.

Results of races will be added as Dave/Richard/Shaun and others see them, so keep looking in the results section.

Worthing 10K June 4th

Proceeded by desperate phone calls from Auntie Maureen looking for a loudspeaker, the run still went smoothly as can be expected from a well established event. While the wind may have had some effect, the 5K marker was a bit out, Louis Taub, who is going really well, went through in 16.10, and spluttering runners all the way down the field report big positive splits. Of note is a big pb by Peter Thompson, nice one, and the possible re-emergence of Paul Prosser and Drew Stiles in the road running scene, may they run fast and prosper. Results

South Downs Way Relay, 7th June

Mens Team

From a blustery Beachy Head Tom Ulliott led off the solid vets team that also included Shaun Billing, Kevin Bush, Gary Christie, Raymond Hickman and last minute replacement Mark Halls. It was clear from the start that the team would not be in contention for the overall prize, but there was some hope of a victory in the vets competition, though Arena vets were pushing hard. It came down to the Storrington road works which meant most teams couldn't get to a changeover before the incoming runner. Kev stepped to the plate and ran 2 legs back to back, while the Arena chose to changeover and incurred a 5 minute delay. Brighton vets beat Arena by 3 minutes in the end in fairly controversial circumstances. as always a fantastic day, not even spoilt by a rant from a slightly drunk team leader!

Ladies Team

The ladies team, Sara Hinchliffe, Suzie Copus, Laura Burton, Evie Cicha, Cathy Ulliott and replacement 'Christine' Moyle ran really well, easily beating the Pigs Trotters and arriving at the finish well before the mens team.

Results

Heathfield 10K 22nd June

Windy but otherwise good conditions for this very hilly 10K road race. A great performance by Katie Moore, who has just returned form her studies; placing easily first lady and 10th overall. Together with Laura Burton and Elaine Everill the ladies cleaned up first, second third and team prizes (quite nice engraved mugs). Louis continues his recent form with a fine third, and John Ramsden reports that the ambulance got quite close to him sometimes, he wonders if it is a sign. Results.

Cathy and Tom's wedding day 10 miler - 7:15(ish) Carat's Café Thurs 12th June
Written by Shaun Billing

Tom Ulliott email:

All,

Cathy and I are planning to hold what will now be the 5th of our wedding day 10 mile fun runs.

Date for this to be Thursday 12th June, all other details as before and again we will probably add the 5 mile option as well for those that are still recovering from the SDW relay the previous Saturday - lightweights!

There's a lot of fixture congestion at this time so it's never easy to find a good date to suit all and it's a pity this clashes with the Hove Park 5k but at least the Worthing 10k and the SDW relays will not be affected!

As usual we will be gathering at the car park at Carat's Café and aiming to set off as close as possible to 7:15

Best wishes and see as many of you as can make on the 12th

Tom and of course Cathy

Copenhagen Marathon 18th May
Written by Shaun Billing
Tuesday, 20 May 2008 07:13

After braving the high prices, poor service, terrible food (thank god for Wagamamas!) and strange mix of regulation (no-one dares jay walk), and liberalism (there are some mind boggling tv channels) of the very interesting city of Copenhagen, the Brighton raiders ('take that for the monasteries!' [thanks for that one Neil]) lined up for the marathon. The temperature was perfect, but there was a nagging cold wind, and the course while flat has many turns. Well organised and supported, the Danish seem to be quite a sporty lot judging by the number of cyclists, and were keen to show their appreciation. Of note was the way the runners were weaved through busy roads in a phased way, analogous to the way pedestrians cross Birdcage Walk during the London marathon. Very clever. Neil was disappointed with his run but he hadn't completely recovered from a cold, and Kader was pleased with his efforts. Full results.
